Our History

In August of 1981, the Charter Class of this Leadership Program met at Clifty Falls for its first retreat. Since that first class, much has changed. But the program has remained a high quality assembly of people who wish to better serve their community. Leadership Clark County selected several Floyd County leaders for its 1985-86 and 1986-87 classes and expanded the monthly program agendas to include both communities.

In 1987, Leadership Clark County was reorganized as Leadership Southern Indiana, and Floyd County alumni were added to the board of directors. Class members are selected from among applicants who have a strong interest or involvement in the community life of Clark, Floyd and surrounding areas regardless of place of residence. It is our hope that Leadership Southern Indiana will continue to provide a strong pool of talented, committed leadership for Southern Indiana, the metropolitan region and the state of Indiana for years to come.

In 2007, alumni came together to strategize on how to take Leadership SI to the next level.  Results of the planning led to the Ogle Foundation providing a matching grant and the hiring of the organizations first full-time executive director in 2010.  In 2013, the ENGAGE program, a skills based program to better prepare or enhance leadership skills, was launched.  In 2014, NEXGEN, a youth leadership program for 11th graders, was launched, and in 2017 and the program doubled due to its popularity.
