On March 8th, Leadership Southern Indiana’s DISCOVER Class of 2017 heard from many agencies in the area for Health and Human Services Day. The class served and ate lunch at Community Kitchen in Jeffersonville, where they heard from Board Members and Director Rick Kopple. Community Kitchen leadership talked about serving 5 meals per week, with an average cost of about $250 per day. The organization serves approximately 52,000 meals per year, and as of December 2016, decided to add a meal the last Sunday of each month.
After a moving experience of eating with local residents, serving meals and volunteering for clean-up, the class decided to step in to fund all 12 Sunday meals, a total of $3,000, and volunteer four Sundays throughout the rest of the year, averaging approximately 10 volunteers per day.
So far, the class has raised nearly $2,000, and will be volunteering at Community Kitchen the last Sundays in June, August, October and December.
On the morning of May 10, the class will present a check to Community Kitchen for their Community Leadership Day, the final day of the program.
